Weekly Movers: Mamdani Surge, Ohio Senate Tightens, Fed Chair Odds Scramble

Zohran Mamdani's NYC mayoral odds jumped 11 points on Polymarket after a debate performance; Ohio's open Senate seat tightened as a late entrant scrambled field; Fed-chair-successor markets reacted to Powell telegraph.

The setup

Three markets saw the largest implied-probability shifts on Polymarket this week. Movements were primarily driven by debates, late entrants, and public signaling from incumbents.

1. NYC Mayor 2025 — Mamdani +11

Zohran Mamdani's implied win probability on Polymarket moved from 34% to 45% over the past seven days. The move came primarily in the 48 hours after a widely-covered debate performance.

Cuomo's implied odds fell correspondingly, from 28% to 22%, suggesting the movement is a direct transfer rather than a field-wide repricing. Adams held steady around 8%. The remaining field (Sliwa, field of Democrats) absorbed the rest.

2. Ohio Senate 2026 — tightens

With Brown retiring, the Ohio open seat has been priced as Republican-leaning but not safe. This week saw the implied probability of a Republican win tick from 68% to 62%, after a prominent Democratic former statewide official announced they were considering a run.

The 6-point move on a 9-month-out race is unusual; the catalyst was a single headline, and markets are likely over-reacting in the short term. Expect reversion if the announcement doesn't materialize into an actual filing in the next two weeks.

3. Fed chair successor — pricing scrambles

Polymarket's "Next Fed chair" market saw the pack tighten: no single name exceeds 22% implied probability. Top contenders trade in a 12–22% band. Powell's signaling that he intends to step down at term end (2026) rather than accept a short-term extension contributed to the repricing.

Polls vs markets

Where polls exist for these races, markets are tracking them within 3 to 5 points. The Mamdani move outpaces recent polling by about 5 points, suggesting either (a) the market is over-reacting to the debate or (b) polls haven't yet captured the debate effect. We'll know by next week.

What we're watching next week

  • Additional Ohio Senate announcements
  • Early-state presidential filings for 2028 (Iowa, NH — deadlines approaching)
  • Fed FOMC meeting and any post-meeting Fed chair speculation
  • Shutdown-2026 market as budget talks continue
